Filamentous phage associated with recent pandemic strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus.

A group of pandemic strains of Vibrio parahaemolyticus has recently appeared in Asia and North America. We demonstrate that a filamentous phage is specifically associated with the pandemic V. parahaemolyticus strains. An open reading frame unique to the phage is a useful genetic marker to identify these strains.

Identification of Vibrio parahaemolyticus pandemic group-specific DNA sequence by genomic subtraction.

A genomic subtraction between a pandemic Vibrio parahaemolyticus and a nonpandemic strain that seemed to be clonally related was performed. A subtractive DNA fragment was identified to be a part of a 16-kbp insertion sequence which was present in almost all pandemic strains but not in nonpandemic strains tested.

Vibrio parahaemolyticus—Seafood Safety and Associations with Higher Organisms

Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a halophilic seafood-borne pathogen, is one of the 12 known pathogenic species of the genus Vibrio. The halophile is one of the major bacterial causes of food-borne illness that affects people who consume raw or improperly cooked seafood. This bacterium was first identified from the intestinal contents of a victim of food poisoning who had consumed half-dried sardines c...

Assessment of evolution of pandemic Vibrio parahaemolyticus by multilocus sequence typing.

The genetic relatedness of 81 isolates of Vibrio parahaemolyticus was assessed by multilocus sequence typing. The strain with serotype O3:K6 emerged as a pandemic pathogen in 1996, with subsequent expansion to include strains having serotypes O1:KUT, O4:K68, and O1:K25. Sequence data from gyrB, recA, dnaE, and gnd revealed that 16 distinct serogroups isolated prior to the pandemic were highly v...

Isolation, identification and molecular characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus from fish samples in Kolkata.

UNLABELLED Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a marine bacterium which is also responsible for acute diarrhoeal illness in human beings. Eating raw seafish or contaminated seafood is responsible for acute gastroenteritis. The aim of this study was to investigate the isolation, identification and molecular characterization of Vibrio parahaemolyticus from the fish samples in Kolkata, India. MATERIALS A...

Vibrio parahaemolyticus Strains of Pandemic Serotypes Identified from Clinical and Environmental Samples from Jiangsu, China

Vibrio parahaemolyticus has emerged as a major foodborne pathogen in China, Japan, Thailand, and other Asian countries. In this study, 72 strains of V. parahaemolyticus were isolated from clinical and environmental samples between 2006 and 2014 in Jiangsu, China. The serotypes and six virulence genes including thermostable direct hemolysin (TDR) and TDR-related hemolysin (TRH) genes were assess...
